Gun has so much going for it, but it’s such a short game that as soon are you build up your stats and really get going…there’s no more of it to play. Which is quite annoying.
You play as Colton White (Thomas Jane) in a free-roaming western landscape. You can grab whatever horse you want, kill who you feel and take-on a fair amount of side-missions if you feel like taking a break from the main story, which is itself interesting but way too short.
The villains are all evil bastards but brilliantly acted by the likes of Brad Dourif, Ron Pearlman and Lance Henriksen. Other actors with cool voices like Kris Kristofferson and Tom Skerritt fill out supporting roles and the dialogue and cut-scenes are all pretty good and avoid the unnatural, forced feel that many video games have. Many of the characters and situations could have been fleshed out more but they merely conveniently contribute to the slight ‘search for a hidden goldmine’ plot.
The action of the game is brilliantly done (the controls take a little practice though), with great use of slow-motion when blowing large chunks of bad guy heads off. Weapons range from twin guns, rifles and shotguns to swords, bows, dynamite and whisky bombs. You can even scalp people, but it adds nothing to stats, so it’s kind of pointless. Side missions can either be errand boy tasks, rounding up cattle or killing random bad guys. The destruction factor could have been higher, but you could say that about a lot of games.
The actual gameplay universe is quite small too. But it still feels superficially expansive. With loads of little valleys, railroad tracks and and coyote trails it can be fun exploring, but you’ll get familiar with it too quickly.
My fave thing about this game however is the music. It’s a shame it’s not available on CD because it really is exciting and echoes John Barry’s main theme to Dances With Wolves. With so many lesser video game scores getting CD releases these days I wouldn’t be too surprised if the Gun score came out eventually.
Add it all up and you have a fun, if all too slight, game that is worth it if you can pick it up half price (like I did) but not a full RRP. If only they made it longer, we could have a classic.

I am a huge fan of the Western. So you can imagine how excited I was when I heard that Gun developers Neversoft had hired a Hollywood scriptwriter to create the plot for the game and had also brought on A-list voice talent (Kris Kristofferson, etc.) to add atmosphere. This was going to be Unforgiven meets Lonesome Dove meets John Wayne, it was gonna be great! Unfortunately, after breezing through this game in a couple of days, I’m left scratching my head.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fun game. The plot moves along briskly, even if it is a tad over the top (the main villain travels in a locomotive with a skull on the front
). The voice acting is as good as promised. And the action comes fast and heavy.
It’s in these action scenes that Gun especially shines. Every type of mission that you would ever want to try is there: stealth, huge Call of Duty style squad assaults, fixed turrent gunning, and probably anything else you can imagine. Targeting is forgiving, you don’t have to be spot on to score hits. To make things even easier, you can enter a “Quickdraw” mode that is similar to “Bullet-Time” in Max Payne: for about 15 seconds time slows down and you can kill multiple enemies with ease. There are a variety of period weapons, including a bow and arrow which is especially fun. You can even travel around the game world on horse, which I really enjoyed. All the ingredients seem to be there.
However, the fact that the game is designed and billed as a “Grand Theft Auto: Old West”, means that it has to be judged on a different standard. And the game developers really did not do very much to make the game world seem huge and interactive. You can only interact with about 5-10 NPCs. There are only 2 towns with about 2 streets each. The game world only takes about five minutes to fully explore. And the main plot itself will not take even the slowest gamer more than 10 hours to complete. There is a bit of replay value with some of the side missions; keeping the peace as a sheriff’s deputy or tracking down criminals as a bounty hunter are both fun. But most of the other modes are just boring (poker, pony express, buffalo hunting).
The graphics and sound are also below par. With the exception of some of the outdoor backgrounds and character faces, the graphics are outdated. And the sound, with the exception of the acting, is completely forgettable. The presentation overall is pretty good, however, even though the technology isn’t there. Cutscenes are well done and the overall game atmosphere does make you feel as if you are in the Old West. But on the whole, the graphics and sound just contribute more to the feeling that this is a half-assed game, and that the developers would have been well-served to spend a couple more months fleshing it out.
Try don’t buy, and you won’t be disappointed. Gun provides about ten hours of solid fun, perfect for a long weekend.

I just rented this game. Went through a couple of levels and I like it. Its like a western Grand Theft auto (except not as much criminal element and you ride horses). You do the main missions to continue through the game. Lots of side missions such as bounties, pony express runs, and other odd jobs around the western towns. Nice variety of old guns for shooting and a variety of other weapons such as axes for close (and no gun) combat. If you get a chance to play it, do.

A third person shooter set in Dodge and Empire of the Old West GUN takes a player to another time period in a fairly authentic manner. What this game does right is most often the special teams work, from the way your horse can saunter or gallop to the exceptional environments, you will be transported to a place far from the URBAN/Military environs we so often encounter in shooter/action games. The meat on the bones here is an exceptional story with some of my favorite voice acting EVER in a game, I mean how can CLANCY BROWN,LANCE HENRIKSEN,BRAD DOURIF etc.. not work for the genre. The open sandbox feel of the game is minimal until you get to Empire where much of the side quests and extras open up, unlike the initial Dodge level which allows for a couple side missions and some poker. I would have liked more interactivity in the gold mining (its automatic just press Y) and few more minigames like the poker tournaments, the game also could have used a little polish around the edges (it froze on me once during a load screen) and the controls can be a little complex. The representation of the GUN in the game is most felt with the QUICKDRAW (neo style slo mo)while cool and convenient you will find yourself relying on it too much, despite a wide array of weapons available including whiskey bombs. Finally the stats are a little thin for a sandbox game but there are enough to have fun keeping track of. Overall a blast and an incredible production as far as story and presentation go, not much replay value but I am sure the sequel will fix that. Recommended if the GENRE appeals to you, but it is for adults. 4.20 stars

Ok, I actually bought this on a whim thinking, ok, a fun western game. The graphics are excellent, give an excellent storyline, but as everyone else has said, its a short game. you can make it longer by playing all the side missions, (bounty hunting, poker, etc) but it just needs to be like a 20-30 hour game not just 8-10. Its so worth the money though. One of the funnest 1 player games on the gamecube and Wii.
